NZ Standard 4223.3:2016 - Glazing in Buildings

Only toughened (tempered) glass or laminated glass can be used for balustrades. Toughened glass undergoes a heat treatment to increase strength, while laminated glass consists of two or more layers of glass bonded with an interlayer for added strength and safety.

The minimum thickness for toughened glass is typically 10mm, ensuring it can withstand significant impacts while for laminated glass, the minimum thickness is usually 6.76mm.

Glass edges must be smooth and free from chips or cracks to prevent stress points that could lead to failure.

The glass must be securely fixed at the top and bottom, or otherwise supported to prevent any movement that could compromise its integrity.

NZ Building Code Clause F4 - Safety from Falling

The minimum height for a balustrade in residential settings is 1 meter (1000mm) above the finished floor level of decks, balconies, and accessible roofs. For commercial settings, the minimum height is generally higher, depending on the specific use and location within the building.

Balustrades must be designed to resist impact forces. They should withstand a point load of 0.5 kN applied at any point along the top edge. In some high-use areas or public spaces, the load requirements can be higher, so it’s essential to verify the specific requirements based on the intended use of the space.

Handrails are mandatory if the balustrade height exceeds 1 meter. Handrails must be securely attached and able to withstand a load of 0.2 kN applied in any direction.

Are you aware of your property's wind zone category?

Wind zones are classified based on the expected wind speeds in different regions. According to the New Zealand Standard NZS 3604:2011, these zones range from low to extra high, with some areas requiring specific design considerations due to unique conditions. Each zone reflects the varying degrees of wind exposure and pressure that structures in those areas must withstand.

The significance of wind zones lies in their direct impact on the design, material selection, and installation techniques of glass balustrades. In areas with higher wind speeds, the load requirements for these structures are more stringent. We will make sure that the glass balustrades are not only compliant but also provide maximum safety for you and your family.

What are the different types of glass that you can use for glass balustrades?

Toughened Glass

Toughened Glass

Toughened glass is a safe choice for glass balustrades due to its strength, up to 5 times stronger than regular glass. If it breaks, it shatters into small, dull pieces, reducing the risk of injury compared to sharp shards from regular glass.

Interlinking rail and gap clamps may be required*

Laminated Glass

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is safe for glass balustrades because it consists of two or more layers of glass bonded together with a plastic interlayer. If shattered, the glass remains bonded to the interlayer, reducing the risk of injury from sharp glass fragments.

SentryGlas

SentryGlas

SentryGlas is a type of laminated glass known for its exceptional strength and durability. It is up to 100 times stiffer and 5 times stronger than traditional laminates. This makes it an ideal choice for glass balustrades where safety and structural integrity are greatest.

What are the available options to customise the glass balustrades?

Standard Clear Glass

Standard Glass

Standard glass is a popular choice for glass balustrades due to its strength and cost-effectiveness. It provides a clear view and is suitable for various applications.

Low Iron Glass

Low Iron Glass

Low iron glass is ideal for glass balustrades where clarity is crucial. It has a higher light transmission and lacks the greenish tint of standard glass.

Frosted Glass

Frosted Glass

Frosted glass is often used for privacy or to diffuse light. It adds a decorative element to glass balustrades and is available in various patterns.

Tinted Glass

Tinted Glass

Tinted glass is good for glass balustrades as it reduces glare and heat transmission. It also adds a touch of colour and style to the design.

Frequently Asked Questions for Frameless Glass Balustrade Installation

A balustrade serves as both a stylish and robust safety barrier, fully compliant with NZ Building Regulations. Moreover, its purposeful design prevents people from falling from heights, making it compulsory for areas with drops over one meter. These areas include balconies, decks, and stairways.

Within our range of offerings, we present a diverse selection of glass balustrades. These options include handrails that can integrate into the barrier or function independently as standalone rails. While we prioritize safety enhancement, these balustrades also bring a contemporary touch to elevated spaces. Additionally, they help create comfortable outdoor areas that provide protection against wind and weather elements.

To guide your decision-making process, we conduct on-site consultations. Additionally, during these sessions, we actively engage in thorough discussions about your specific needs, ideas, and the available shapes and sizes. This ensures that you have the necessary information to make an informed choice when selecting the ideal balustrade for your requirements.

Modern hardwearing materials now surpass the limited choices of the past, making them a highly recommended alternative to painted timber finishes. While budget considerations remain important, prioritizing good value and longevity is essential. Therefore, opting for finishes such as powder-coated aluminium handrails and toughened safety glass infills is advisable. Although these materials may involve a higher initial cost, they offer significant long-term benefits. Importantly, they are durable, low-maintenance, and eliminate the need for regular painting or touch-ups.

The choice of materials ultimately relies on personal preference and what best suits your specific situation. For those fortunate enough to have a breathtaking view they wish to preserve, glass balustrades emerge as the ideal solution. These balustrades provide an unobstructed view while still ensuring safety.

Choosing the right style of balustrade for your home holds significant importance. For instance, some customers and architects find themselves drawn to the charm of the original aluminium post and glass balustrades. These options offer a diverse range of styles that seamlessly suit both modern and older homes. On the other hand, the frameless and semi-frameless glass balustrades have been gaining immense popularity. This surge in popularity is largely attributed to their stunning modern aesthetics and impactful design statements.

To streamline your decision-making process, it’s beneficial to step back and take a closer look at your home’s style. Moreover, identify the specific features or themes that resonate with you when making design choices. This strategic approach aids in pinpointing the balustrade style that aligns seamlessly with your personal preference. For example, if your home boasts a traditional or classic architectural style, opting for a minimalist finish might not be the best fit. Similarly, a traditional baluster balustrade or a larger round handrail might feel out of place in homes with modern or restrained designs. By selecting a style feature and seeking out a balustrade that echoes that chosen style, you can then focus on the type of fixing and the final color to achieve a harmonious design outcome.

The size of the area you need to cover significantly influences the type of balustrade you choose, especially for extensive outdoor spaces. Experienced installers play a crucial role in such cases. They can guide you to determine the optimal solution for your project, often suggesting a combination of various balustrade styles. This approach guarantees the most cost-effective and comprehensive solution. Glass balustrades excel in situations where preserving an unobstructed view is paramount.

While 12mm toughened clear glass remains the most common option, we offer a variety of other glass thicknesses. We encourage you to consult with us for a comprehensive understanding of the available choices. This will enable you to gain deeper insights into the various glass options that align with your specific requirements.

The Building Code mandates specific height requirements for balustrades:

  • Balustrades must be 900mm in height for stairs or ramps.
  • For decks on residential properties exceeding 1 meter in height, they must be 1 meter high from the finished floor level.
  • In commercial properties and all other locations, balustrades must be 1.1 meters high. Additionally, the balustrade must be unclimbable. For further information, consult Clause F4 of the Building Code.

Glass balustrades have surged in popularity due to their minimalist appeal. As you explore this option, you’ll encounter various framing choices. Framed glass balustrades, which represent the most affordable alternative, showcase a frame encircling each piece of glass, providing structural support. Semi-framed versions introduce a heightened sense of style with partial framing, resulting in a look that is both stylish and allows for a less obstructed view. At the higher end of the spectrum, frameless glass balustrades represent the costliest option but epitomize sleekness. They are typically secured using high-grade stainless steel channels, ensuring a seamless appearance that is both elegant and modern.

Within balustrades, top rails assume a crucial role by providing an essential backup in the event of glass breakages. These rails offer a continuous handrail or support barrier, acting as an additional layer of safety beyond the glass barrier itself. Particularly for frameless glass balustrades, a specially designed slim top rail measuring 25*21mm has been crafted to seamlessly integrate into the overall finished aesthetic. This slim top rail can be mirrored in the handrail, resulting in a cohesive and harmonious design. For enhanced blending, dark-colored top rails tend to be even more effective.

On the other hand, fully frameless glass balustrades, embracing a design that omits top rails, rely on specialized laminated glasses. These glasses are engineered to hold the glass barrier upright in the event of breakage. This specific approach is favored by customers seeking an unobstructed view without any intervening elements like a top rail. The laminated glass comprises two or more sheets of glass that are permanently bonded together by a plastic interlayer. Should impact occur, the interlayer adheres to any shattered fragments, maintaining the overall integrity of the glass and notably minimizing the likelihood of serious injury.

The NZ Building Code comprehensively covers regulations that pertain to various aspects of stair construction. This includes specifications concerning the height, depth, and pitch of stairs, in addition to mandating the presence of safety barriers (balustrades) and handrails. These requirements are compulsory for all stairs within New Zealand. Specifically, balustrades are expected to maintain a minimum height of 900mm. It’s noteworthy that this height differs from the 1000mm minimum required in other parts of the house, including stair landings. In parallel, handrails are expected to achieve a minimum height of 900mm from the stair pitch. However, they can extend up to 1000mm in height. These handrails should run continuously along one side of any stairway within a residential home.

By adhering to these regulations, the safety of individuals during the ascent and descent of stairs is ensured. To navigate these regulations effectively, it’s prudent to engage with a knowledgeable balustrade installer. These professionals possess a thorough understanding of these regulations and can skillfully recommend compliant solutions that seamlessly match your preferred style.
