Glass pool fence and gate for a landscaped family pool – Bayswater, North Shore
- Location: Bayswater, North Shore Auckland (private residence)
- Project type: Glass pool fence, glass around external stairs, custom aluminium pool gate
- Project partners: Homeowners (private), builder & landscaper: local outdoor renovation specialist
Project Overview
Project brief & scope
Design challenges
- The pool sits on a raised, tiled platform with external stairs down to the garden, so the fence had to bridge changes in level while maintaining the required pool barrier height.
- The builder wanted tapered miniposts to match other hardware used on site, which meant coordinating hardware choice, spacing and fixings with the stair stringers and concrete plinths.
- The council requested clear documentation for the stair area and for the pool barrier as part of the CCC process, including follow-up RFI on the PS3.
Our approach
Royal Glass worked closely with the landscaper to lock in a practical, compliant design before any glass was ordered. Key steps included:
On-site measure and concept design – Our technician met the builder on site to agree the final fence line, heights and stair details. A concept layout and then a detailed shop drawing were prepared and refined with feedback from the landscaper.
Engineered glass pool fence system – We used a tapered minipost system with toughened safety glass, designed to work with the tiled plinths and stair stringers. Stainless steel handrails were added to the stair run to give a complete pool barrier solution.
Flexible layout for the owners – During design, the owners decided to extend the glass further along the pool edge and add an extra panel beside the main stairs instead of aluminium. We updated the model and quote so the glass pool barrier could run continuously and keep sightlines open.
Weather-aware scheduling – Because sealants and fixing details depend on dry conditions, part of the installation was completed first, with a return visit on a fine day to finish the silicone and final checks.
After-care adjustments – Once the project was complete, we returned to fine-tune the glass pool gate so it self-closed and latched smoothly, ensuring ongoing compliance and easy everyday use.
The finished result
The finished project is a clean, modern glass pool fence on Auckland’s North Shore that frames the pool rather than blocking it. The frameless glass and tapered miniposts line up neatly with the tiled edges, while the custom aluminium pool gate and short fence run tie into the house and boundary.
The landscaper confirmed the job was completed to their expectations and the owners gained:
A safe, compliant glass pool barrier that meets New Zealand pool fencing regulations
Uninterrupted views between the house, deck and pool area
A system that works with high-quality paving, planting and outdoor furniture
Clear PS1 and PS3 documentation to support CCC and future resale
This case study shows how careful coordination between the owners, landscaper and Royal Glass can turn a complex, multi-level site into a seamless glass pool fencing solution that looks good and keeps the pool area safe.
