Properly installing window beading can enhance the look and durability of your windows. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get it right:
Step 1: Prepare the Frame for the Double Glaze Unit
Ensure the window frame is clean and free of debris. Remove any old silicone using a chisel or putty knife, and brush away dust and dirt.
Step 2: Clean the Window Unit
Check the window unit for sealant residue or adhesive lumps. Use a razor blade or putty knife to gently remove these.
Step 3: Check the Fit for the Double Glaze Unit
Lift the new window into the frame, ensuring it fits snugly. Use rubber setting pads at the bottom to support the glass. Check for any rocking, which may indicate a need for frame adjustments.
Safety Tip: Always wear gloves and use proper lifting equipment for heavy windows.
Step 4: Apply Sealing Tape
Attach sealing tape to all four sides of the frame, ensuring it is not stretched. Press the tape firmly into place.
Step 5: Add Setting Blocks
Place setting blocks under the glass on the sill to support the glass and prevent moisture buildup.
Step 6: Insert the Window
Carefully insert the window into the frame, adding a bead of silicone along the base for extra support. Seal around the window with silicone, ensuring it is ‘Neutral Cure’ silicone.
Step 7: Cut External Beading
If needed, cut external beading to cover the frame edges. Use 12 mm tri-quad for a neat finish. Cut the top and bottom pieces at right angles, and the vertical pieces at 45-degree angles to cover the horizontals.
Step 8: Attach External Beading
Hammer small nails into the beading, ensuring they come out on the side that sits against the frame, not the glass. Use a nail gun for faster installation, but be cautious not to break the glass.
Step 9: Trim External Capping
If the glass extends beyond the frame, trim the external capping to cover the frame edges. Use a small handheld router to increase the rebate if necessary.
Step 10: Attach External Capping
Cover the frame with a 30 mm cap, using screws for a secure fit.
Step 11: Paint the Frame
Paint the window frame as needed, touching up any imperfections on the beading.
Step 12: Remove Excess Silicone
After allowing the silicone to dry, remove any excess with a knife or chisel. Use paper towel and methylated spirits to clean off any remaining silicone.
