F9/AS2 Small Heated Pool Covers: Design It Right, Pass First Time (NZ)

Small heated pools and spas look effortless when you design safety into them from the start. F9/AS2 small heated pool covers compliance (NZ) gives you a clear, prescriptive path for spa pools ≤ 5 m² with walls 760 mm above the adjacent surface. Treat the cover as engineered safety gear: it must close easily for an adult, resist climbing and tampering, and stay secure under load and weather.

When F9/AS2 applies

Use F9/AS2 when your spa or small heated pool has a water surface area of 5 m² or less and walls 760 mm high. The cover must be simple for an adult to return to the closed position—every time. If your project also includes fences or gates, align the details with your broader barrier strategy so consent, inspection, and daily use feel seamless.

Wall geometry that stops climbing

  • Height: Keep the top of the wall ≥ 760 mm above surrounding ground/floor at every point.

  • Lean: Make the wall vertical, or slope it outwards ≤ 15° from vertical.

  • Clear zone: Within 760 mm of the rim, keep the exterior free of objects that help climbing (planters, seats, pumps, cover cradles).

  • No toe-holds: On the wall itself, avoid projections/indentations > 10 mm from the wall plane.

Quick win: Draw a “760 mm no-climb halo” on plans/elevations so nothing drifts into the danger zone during landscaping or final styling.

The cover: strong, crowned, and secure

Point-load strength: Specify a cover that supports a 200 N (≈ 20 kg) vertical point load applied over a Ø 120 mm area at the centre. Ask suppliers for test data and edge-stiffening details if you’re spanning wide.

Shed water: Camber the top surface so it slopes from centre to edges. No ponding means less stress on fasteners and less temptation for kids to play on the surface.

Fastenings that hold:

  • Use hold-down straps with lockable snap fasteners (strap body ≥ 33 mm wide), or choose metal padlocks where adult misuse/security is a concern.

  • With the cover secured, there must be no opening that admits a 100 mm sphere when you apply a 100 N (≈ 10 kg) force in any direction at any location.

Maintenance matters: UV degrades webbing and plastic components. Include inspection intervals in the O&M manual and replace parts at the first sign of chalking, cracking, or creep.

Required signage (exact wording)

Fix signs on two opposite sides of the cover, using black letters ≥ 5 mm (per F8/AS1 legibility rules):

WARNING: This spa pool cover must be kept locked except when under adult supervision

Place signs where users can’t miss them during opening and locking.

Design checklist for F9/AS2 small heated pool covers compliance (NZ)

  • Scope confirmed: Spa/small heated pool ≤ 5 m², walls ≥ 760 mm all around.

  • No-climb detailing: Wall vertical or ≤ 15° outward; 760 mm clear zone; no > 10 mm wall projections.

  • Cover strength: 200 N over Ø 120 mm at centre (manufacturer certificate on file).

  • Crowned top: Visible fall from centre to edges; hose-test for ponding.

  • Fasteners: Straps ≥ 33 mm with lockable snaps or metal padlocks; anchors sized for pull-out and corrosion.

  • Sphere/force test: With the cover locked, a Ø 100 mm sphere must not pass anywhere under 100 N applied in any direction.

  • Usability: A typical adult can readily close and lock the cover.

  • Signage: Two sides, black letters ≥ 5 mm, exact wording above.

Why F9/AS2 small heated pool covers compliance (NZ) helps your design

Prescriptive rules remove guesswork. You get a small set of measurable targets—height, lean, load, opening size, strap width, signage—that you can draw, specify, and commission quickly.

The result: fewer RFIs, fewer site fixes, faster inspection, and a spa that’s safe by default and easy to live with.
