If you have ever noticed a soft green tint along the edge of a “clear” pane, you were looking at the natural iron in standard float glass. Low iron glass reduces that iron content so the glass looks more neutral and transmits a little more visible light. The result is truer whites, cleaner edges, and better colour fidelity for back-painted panels and display work.
How much clearer is it, really
Clarity shows up two ways: edge colour and light transmission. Low iron glass typically delivers a few percent higher visible light transmittance than standard clear, and the difference grows as glass gets thicker. Fun fact: this is why thick countertops and exposed edges on stair rails look much “whiter” in low iron.
Where low iron earns its keep
Choose it when colour accuracy and edges matter. Back-painted splashbacks match your swatch more reliably, white stones and tiles read true behind protective glass, and display cases avoid a green cast. It is also popular for thick laminates in feature partitions and guards where the edge is on show.
When standard clear is perfectly fine
If the glass sits in front of darker finishes, if edges are hidden by frames, or if you are tinting, frosting, or printing the glass, standard clear often looks identical once installed and helps the budget. Pro tip: compare small edge samples of both types against your actual finishes before you decide.
Strength and processing
Both low iron and standard clear are soda-lime float glass. They can be toughened, laminated, curved, and fabricated to meet safety requirements. The “low iron” part affects colour and light, not structural strength.
Common home uses
Low iron is a favourite wherever you want ultra-clean edges and accurate colour, including balustrades, glass pool fences, glass partition walls, glass splashbacks, and shower glass. If you only upgrade one location, make it the area where you see the edge most, like stair guards or the return on a splashback.
