Contemporary Glass Pool Fence for a New Backyard in St Johns, Auckland

Project Overview

Royal Glass partnered with the owners and their builder–landscaper, Goodwin Construction, on a new concrete pool and outdoor living area in St Johns, Auckland. The brief was to design and install a compliant glass pool fence that would feel light and open, protect the views back to the house, and tie in with the modern landscaping and new boundary fencing. From the start, the builder wanted a sleek, black-framed glass pool fence that matched other exterior finishes, while still delivering the clean, almost invisible look of frameless glass. The pool fence also needed to integrate with a raised deck and an existing timber boundary fence, so the fixing method and glass heights had to be carefully coordinated with the engineer and council consent team.

Design brief: clean lines, safe access, and black hardware

Working from the builder’s draft plans and onsite measurements, we developed a frameless glass pool fencing layout using:
● Round mini-posts around the main pool edge for a minimal, floating-glass look
● A matching side-fixing channel system where the fence follows the boundary and deck structure
● A slim top rail to satisfy structural and hand-grip needs without making the stair feel heavy
The owners wanted the glass to sit neatly in line with the pool coping and surrounding hardscape. We confirmed the standard 1200 mm glass height for the pool barrier and discussed options for increasing height at specific points near the boundary where more privacy and wind protection were needed. Black mini posts, black channel and hardware were chosen to echo the dark joinery and boundary elements, giving the glass pool fence a sharp architectural edge.

Engineering, consent and product details

Because this was part of a new pool build, council consent and structural sign-off were critical. Royal Glass prepared PS1 documentation for the mini-post pool fence and the channel-fixed glass along the boundary, working with the project engineer to make sure the design met the New Zealand Building Code requirements for pool safety. We supplied:
By managing the PS1/PS3 paperwork and providing fixing details early, the builder could plan their concrete plinths, deck framing and fence posts around the final frameless pool fencing layout, avoiding rework later.

Installation and onsite challenges

Like many Auckland pool projects, timing and weather played a big part in the programme. The team coordinated site visits around concrete pours, tiling and other trades to avoid delays. Our installers returned to site to:

  • Complete the first stage of installation once the coping and tiling were ready

  • Add additional clamps and fine-tune the boundary channel section when the final fence length was confirmed

  • Revisit after driveway works to check clearances, gate swing and latch operation

At one point the builder reported a “wobbly” section of glass near the driveway. We inspected the fence, added extra long clamps to stiffen the channel system and checked all fixings, ensuring the glass pool fence felt solid and secure before final sign-off.

Final result

The finished project is a great example of how frameless glass pool fencing in Auckland can protect a pool area without blocking light or views. The combination of black mini posts around the pool and a matching side-mount channel along the boundary gives the owners a continuous, streamlined glass line that works with both the new deck and the existing fencing.

Key outcomes for the owners and builder:

  • A fully compliant glass pool fence that meets council and engineering requirements

  • Minimal visual impact from inside the home and outdoor living spaces

  • Safe, reliable access through a self-closing glass gate

  • Black hardware and channel that tie in with Goodwin Construction’s contemporary landscaping design

  • Responsive after-care, including adjustments and PS3 documentation to support the Code Compliance Certificate process

This case study shows how Royal Glass can work closely with builders, landscapers and engineers to turn a complex consented design into a finished glass pool fence that looks simple, performs well and enhances the entire backyard.
