Hardware Finishes in NZ: Powder Coating vs Anodising (and Electroplated Imports)

The finish you choose sets the final look and longevity of your shower or balustrade hardware especially in New Zealand’s coastal climate. Below is a plain-English guide to the three common finishing routes and the popular colour styles they produce.

Powder coating (PC)

A dry powder is electrostatically applied and baked to form a tough, paint-like film on metal (commonly aluminium or steel). Great colour range (including Matte Black), good impact resistance, and widely used for balustrade posts/rails and hardware covers. Regular washing preserves appearance in coastal zones.

Anodising (AN)

An electrochemical treatment that grows a hard aluminium-oxide layer on aluminium itself—thin, stable and highly corrosion-resistant, ideal for exposed coastal sites. Colours are typically metallic tones (clear/silver, bronze, black). Film thickness is specified by NZ corrosion zones.

Electroplated imports (EP)

Many imported fittings (e.g., hinges/taps) come electroplated in Polished Chrome, Brushed Nickel or Brushed Brass/Bronze. The finish is deposited as a thin metal layer; it delivers a crisp decorative look but is not a locally applied coating. Care with cleaning and handling helps longevity.

Which finish where? (shower & balustrade context)

Use case Best fit Why
Exterior balustrade posts/rails Anodised in coastal zones; Powder coated widely used Anodising gives excellent corrosion resistance; powder coat offers broader colour choice (e.g., Matte Black). Match the whole set for colour consistency. (WANZ)
Shower channels/frames Powder coated or Anodised aluminium Both are common; powder coat gives thicker film and uniform colour; anodising gives hard, wear-resistant oxide. (Newline)
Shower hinges/handles, bathroom accessories Often Electroplated imports (Chrome/Nickel/Brass) Decorative metal finish on small hardware; match the bathroom palette and follow gentle-cleaning guidance.
Stainless balustrade hardware near sea Use correct grade (316); finish may be brushed or polished Grade matters more than “look” for durability at the coast. (BRANZ Build)

Finish styles & what they usually mean

Matte Black

Most often powder coated (also available as black anodised on aluminium). Great for contemporary exteriors and shower frames.

Polished Chrome

Typically electroplated on brass/stainless hardware (hinges, mixers). Mirror-bright, timeless.

Brushed Nickel

Typically electroplated (satin, warm-grey tone). Pairs well with stainless.

Pros and cons at a glance

Powder coating

  • Pros: broad colour range (incl. matte textures), impact-resistant, repairable/recoat-able. Keystone Koating

  • Watch-outs: chips/scratches expose substrate; ensure correct pre-treatment to avoid under-film corrosion in harsh zones; schedule rinses near the sea.

Anodising

  • Pros: integral hard oxide, excellent corrosion resistance; thin, architectural look; ideal for aluminium in marine zones.

  • Watch-outs: colour palette is more limited; scratches are not “touched up” like paint—repair typically means replacement.
